How To Clear Saved Settings and/or Saved Games on Steam

Got Torchlight on Steam and having trouble cos the "Steam Cloud" refuses to delete your old content and generate new files?

Apparently the Steam Cloud keeps an offline backup of the files as well as the online version (not to be confused with the game's own location for storing saved data). This means even if you disable cloud for Torchlight, disable cloud for Steam, remove all save data, reinstall the game and run Steam in offline mode the game will still load it's settings and saved games from the Steam Cloud offline cache.

To properly remove old saves and/or settings and have Torchlight make new ones, this is what you must do.

Step 1:
Right-click Torchlight inside your Steam library and select "Properties". Click the "UPDATES" tab and declick the box asking to store data over Steam Cloud.

Step 2:
Delete the saved games and/or settings you wish to reset/delete from: C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight.

Step 3:
Delete everything inside this folder (this is the Steam Cloud cache for Torchlight): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\RANDOM_NUMBER\41500.
The random number in the location is your Steam user id. If you are using more than one Steam account on your computer you will have one folder for each of these.

Now start Torchlight and it should generate new settings and your old saved data should be gone.

Resurrecting a Dead Hardcore Character

Died while playing on hardcore mode and can't be arsed playing the whole thing again? Here's how to "resurrect" your dead character. Note that he will be resurrected with only 200HP at the exact point of death, so be prepared to go full assault if there were a lot of mobs around when you died.

NOTE: It's always a good idea to make backups of files you change before making any changes!

Step 1:
Download Hex Workshop from http://www.hexworkshop.com/.

Step 2:
Open your saved game file (in Hex Workshop) located in C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save.
It will be called either 0.SVT, 1.SVT or 2.SVT depending on which character slot it's stored in.

Step 3:
In Hex Workshop, notice the bottom right window called bookmarks. Right-click in this window and select "Add Bookmark...". Give it any description you like and set the address to "000000D9" and the length to "2".

Step4:
Now click the added bookmark. The location of the flag should now be highlighted. If you still can't find it, right-click the bookmark and select "Goto Selected Bookmark".

Step 5:
At the location of the flag (currently "00 00") enter "4843" then save the file.

Your character should now be alive again. Have fun!
